The glory of autumn foliage from the hundreds of tree varieties introduced to Australia is only one good reason to grow deciduous trees. The bare trees of winter, stark but beautiful, are also valued for their ability to provide change to the scenery. They let through the much needed winter sunlight to benefit lawns, garden beds and outdoor living spaces; and in summer they give shade to these areas.
Availability
We do have limited numbers of trees in stock which are not listed so please ask nursery staff if there is a tree you particularly want. Most varieties listed are available all year.
Ashes
Fraxinus excelsior ‘Aurea’ – Golden Ash – medium sized trees to 7m with beautiful golden autumn foliage. Plant away from drains and house foundations.
Fraxinus oxycarpa ‘Raywoodii’ – Claret Ash – strong growing trees to 10m with brilliant claret coloured autumn foliage.
Birches
Betula pendula – Silver Birch – medium sized trees known for their silver bark and graceful pendulous branches; very attractive when planted in groups; usually grows to 8 – 10m.
Betula pendula ‘Dalecarlica’ – Cut Leaf Birch – a beautiful plant with finely cut leaves, silver bark and graceful pendulous branches. Taller growing than Betula pendula.
Betula pendula ‘Fastigiata’ – same as B.pendula except its growth is narrow and upright like a poplar.
Black Locust
Robinia pseudoacacia ‘Frisia’ – clusters of pale lilac, pea shaped, fragrant flowers in spring; fern-like foliage of golden yellow on slightly spreading tree to 10m; a drought tolerant and attractive shade tree.
Chinese Cedar
Cedrela sinensis – an upright growing tree to 9m with attractive ash-like foliage, which is a beautiful pink colour as it opens in spring. This tree is tolerant of hot conditions in summer.
Gingko
Gingko biloba – beautiful golden yellow autumn foliage, attractive fan shaped leaves, growing to 10m.
Honey Locust
Gleditsia triacanthos ‘Sunburst’ – A beautiful tree to 12m with a broad crown and ascending branches with attractive golden, ferny foliage. This is an excellent shade tree.
Gleditsia triacanthos ‘Rubylace’ – Same as above but with ruby purple growth in spring turning bronze purple in summer.
Maples
Acer japonicum ‘Acontifolium’ – beautiful deeply cut lacy green leaves; crimson-orange in autumn; grows slowly to 2.5m; pretty purple flowers.
Acer palmatum – Japanese Maple – small tree with small lobed green leaves; spreading growth; beautiful orange autumn foliage; grows to 5m.
Acer palmatum ‘Heptalobum Osakazuki’ – large lobed leaves which turn brilliant fiery orange red in autumn; the best Japanese maple for autumn colour.
Acer palmatum ‘Senkaki’ – Red Stemmed Maple – small tree with small lobed pale green leaves with a red edge in spring changing to green in summer and to orange yellow tones in the autumn; brilliant red stems in the winter.
Pistacia
Pistacia chinenis – an attractive tree with leaves like a Rhus (to which many have a severe allergic reaction); but finer leaves which turn brilliant red and orange in autumn; grows to 6m.
Crepe Myrtle
Lagerstroemia indica – Red-orange autumn leaves, smooth bare bark in winter, followed by foliage cover and then delicate pink-mauve flowers late summer. Grows to 4m.
